Custodians of law vow to defy the law

Lawyers warned of massive retaliation if the self-confessed killer Malik Mumtaz Qadri was convicted of murder.

ISLAMABAD:

Lawyers at a seminar on Tuesday warned of massive retaliation if the self-confessed killer of Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer, Malik Mumtaz Qadri, was convicted of murder.

The lawyers stated this during a conference organised by the Namoos-e-Risalat Lawyers Forum Pakistan, titled “Tahafuz-e-Namoos-e-Risalat” (upholding the sanctity of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)), at the Islamabad District Bar Association hall.

The conference was part of a series of lectures by Islamic scholars and experts to address the lawyers on Islamic jurisprudence about blasphemy.

On September 18, Qadri confessed in court that he had killed Punjab governor Salmaan Taseer in Islamabad for his “blasphemous” statements.

ATC-II Judge Syed Pervez Ali Shah recorded his statement during an in-camera trial at Adiyala Jail.

Qadri had also submitted a 40-page statement before the court containing versus of Quran and quotations from the life of Prophet (PBUH) and the decision of Caliphs, based on which he said he decided to slay the governor.
