Former FBI agent urges expanded desert search as Nancy Guthrie investigation enters sixth month

The search for Nancy Guthrie, the missing mother of Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, should be expanded into remote desert terrain, according to a former FBI special agent who believes investigators may still uncover crucial evidence more than five months after her disappearance.

The renewed calls come as the investigation enters its sixth month with no confirmed sightings of the 84-year-old, who vanished from her home in Tucson, Arizona, on February 1, 2026. Authorities continue to believe she was abducted, and the FBI remains actively involved in the case.

Former FBI special agent Jennifer Coffindaffer said law enforcement should consider widening search efforts into surrounding desert areas, arguing that difficult terrain could still hold evidence missed during earlier operations.

According to Coffindaffer, the harsh Arizona landscape presents significant challenges, but investigators should not rule out additional searches as the case evolves.

The FBI and the Pima County Sheriff's Department have already carried out extensive searches using drones, helicopters, search-and-rescue teams and forensic specialists. Investigators have also examined surveillance footage, digital evidence and neighbourhood camera systems while pursuing thousands of public tips.

Sheriff Chris Nanos recently stressed that the investigation remains active despite the passage of time, while also warning the public about fraudulent fundraising schemes and fake QR codes claiming to support the search. Officials have reiterated that law enforcement will never solicit donations related to the case.

Nancy's daughter, Savannah Guthrie, has continued to make emotional public appeals, marking each passing month since her mother's disappearance by urging anyone with information to come forward. She has repeatedly thanked investigators and supporters while expressing hope that her mother will be found.

Although several purported ransom notes have surfaced since Nancy disappeared, investigators have cautioned that many are believed to be fraudulent. Authorities continue to examine any credible communications while pursuing all viable leads.
