Tom Holland has revealed that Lionel Messi, rather than Spider-Man, was his favourite superhero growing up while promoting the upcoming film Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
The actor made the comment during an interview connected to a promotional campaign for the new Marvel film, which also featured Messi.
The campaign imagines Spider-Man giving the Argentina captain a ride using his webs, bringing together two globally recognised figures from entertainment and sport.
When asked which superheroes he admired as a child, Holland surprised fans by choosing the football star instead of a Marvel character.
“I've always really loved Messi,” Holland said.
The remark came despite Holland becoming widely known for portraying Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
His comments highlighted his long-standing admiration for the Argentine forward, whose achievements on the football pitch have earned him a global following.
Messi has often been described by supporters as a footballing icon because of his performances throughout his career.
His achievements for both club and country have led many fans to regard him as one of the greatest players in the sport's history.
The promotional campaign arrives as Messi prepares for another major milestone with Argentina.
The 39-year-old is set to lead his country into the 2026 FIFA World Cup final against Spain.
A victory would see Argentina become the first nation since 1962 to successfully defend the men's World Cup title.
