Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' conquers box office with $51m opening day
Industry analysts expect 'The Odyssey' to finish the weekend with between $100m and $120m domestically

Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey has stormed into cinemas with a $51 million opening day in North America, delivering the biggest first-day debut of the acclaimed director's career and setting the stage for one of the largest opening weekends of 2026.
The epic adaptation of Homer's classic poem earned the impressive figure on Friday following a strong $17.6 million in Thursday preview screenings, comfortably surpassing the opening-day performances of Nolan's previous blockbusters, including Oppenheimer and The Dark Knight Rises.
Industry analysts now expect The Odyssey to finish the weekend with between $100 million and $120 million domestically, while worldwide ticket sales are projected to exceed $200 million, making it one of the year's biggest launches.
The film stars Matt Damon as the legendary Greek hero Odysseus alongside Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong'o, Elliot Page and John Leguizamo. It also marks Nolan's first feature since his Oscar-winning Oppenheimer and the first film ever shot entirely using IMAX film cameras.
Premium large-format screenings have played a significant role in the film's success. IMAX 70mm presentations sold out months before release, with demand remaining exceptionally high throughout opening weekend as audiences sought out Nolan's preferred format.
Internationally, The Odyssey is also enjoying a powerful start. In India, the epic collected around ₹20 crore on its first day, becoming one of the country's biggest Hollywood openings and the largest opening-day performance of Matt Damon's career as a leading actor.
The blockbuster debut continues an outstanding run for Nolan, whose films have consistently drawn audiences to cinemas through large-scale practical filmmaking and original storytelling. Early reviews have also been overwhelmingly positive, further boosting expectations for a lengthy theatrical run.
With The Odyssey leading the box office and helping fuel one of the strongest summer movie seasons in years, cinema operators are optimistic that the film will continue its momentum in the weeks ahead, reinforcing Christopher Nolan's reputation as one of the industry's most reliable theatrical draws.
