Is ‘The Princess Diaries 3’ facing another long wait? Anne Hathaway drops update nobody wanted hearing
Actress says script recently found breakthrough offering fresh optimism despite continued wait for long awaited sequel

Anne Hathaway has shared another update on The Princess Diaries 3, giving fans a clearer idea of why the long awaited Disney sequel has taken longer to reach production. While excitement for another visit to Genovia has remained strong for years, Hathaway indicated that both personal commitments and creative development have contributed to the extended timeline.
During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Hathaway was asked about the status of the third film. Laughing, she replied, "I'm busy making baby number 3!" The comment was made jokingly while discussing the project's progress, with Hathaway suggesting that life outside work has naturally influenced the schedule.
Her latest remarks follow comments she previously made while promoting other projects, where she confirmed that work on The Princess Diaries 3 has continued behind the scenes. Hathaway explained that the creative team has remained committed to developing the sequel despite several delays.
One of the biggest reasons for the slower progress was the unexpected priority given to The Devil Wears Prada 2. Hathaway previously told Entertainment Weekly that her team has been "constantly working on it," but the return to another beloved franchise temporarily moved ahead in the production schedule.
Despite the delays, Hathaway also shared encouraging news for fans. She revealed that the filmmakers recently experienced what she described as a significant story breakthrough after revisiting the screenplay. According to the actress, those creative changes have helped move the project in the right direction, offering renewed confidence that development is progressing.
Disney officially announced The Princess Diaries 3 in 2024, confirming that Adele Lim, best known for Crazy Rich Asians, would direct the sequel. Hathaway has already confirmed she will reprise her role as Mia Thermopolis, the reluctant teenager who became the future Queen of Genovia in the original 2001 film based on Meg Cabot's novels.
The first film became an international favourite and was followed by The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement in 2004. Since then, fans have spent years hoping for another chapter featuring Mia's royal journey.
Although Hathaway's return is confirmed, Disney has not officially announced the full cast. Julie Andrews, who portrayed Queen Clarisse Renaldi in the first two films, has previously expressed affection for the franchise but has not been confirmed for the new sequel. Chris Pine, who appeared in the second film as Nicholas Devereaux, has also not been officially attached to the project.
For now, Hathaway's latest comments suggest that The Princess Diaries 3 remains an active priority rather than a cancelled project.
