Christopher Nolan has confirmed that audiences should not expect another feature film from him anytime soon, revealing that it will be "at least" three years before his next movie arrives after the release of The Odyssey. The Oscar winning filmmaker said the scale and demands of his latest epic pushed both him and his collaborators to their limits, making a lengthy break inevitable before embarking on another major production.

Speaking during an interview on Today while promoting The Odyssey, Nolan was asked whether fans would need to wait another three years for his next project, similar to the gap between Oppenheimer and The Odyssey. His answer was brief but definitive. "Oh, at least," he said, making it clear that his next film remains some distance away.

Nolan explained that bringing Homer's ancient Greek epic to the screen proved to be one of the most demanding undertakings of his career. Although he had wanted to adapt the story for roughly two decades, the reality of filming such a vast production exceeded even his own expectations. He admitted the project tested the stamina of everyone involved, from the cast to the production crew, describing the experience as physically and creatively exhausting.

The director also suggested that the difficulty was appropriate for a story of such legendary proportions. He said making The Odyssey should never have been easy, adding that the challenges were part of doing justice to one of literature's most enduring tales. The production was filmed across multiple countries using IMAX technology, becoming the first feature shot entirely on IMAX 70mm cameras.

Starring Matt Damon as Odysseus, the film features an ensemble cast that includes Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron and Travis Scott. Nolan reunited with several longtime collaborators while also working with new cast members as he transformed Homer's epic into a large scale cinematic event.

The announcement also marks a notable shift for Nolan's release schedule. Since the 2010s, the filmmaker has typically delivered a new feature roughly every three years, with Interstellar, Dunkirk, Tenet, Oppenheimer and now The Odyssey following a relatively consistent pattern. His latest comments suggest that fans may face an even longer wait before discovering what genre or story he chooses next.

Even so, Nolan has given no indication that he is stepping away from filmmaking permanently. Instead, his remarks reflect the enormous commitment required to complete The Odyssey, a project he has described as a long held ambition finally realised after years of planning. The film represents one of the biggest productions of his career, combining practical filmmaking techniques with large scale international shoots and an adaptation of one of history's most influential works of literature.
