Why Tom Holland and Zendaya kept their wedding out of the spotlight

"We don't think that we owe it to anyone. It's our thing, and it has nothing to do with our careers," Holland has said

Tom Holland and Zendaya have finally confirmed what fans had long suspected, they are married. But true to form, the couple chose to celebrate their wedding entirely on their own terms, keeping the ceremony private and revealing almost nothing publicly about the milestone.

Their quiet approach reflects a philosophy they have shared for years: protecting their relationship from the pressures of fame.

During the press tour for Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, Zendaya offered a rare glimpse into their home life, revealing she got a "peeky-peek" at the script after Holland was cast as Telemachus before later learning she would play Athena.

While neither actor directly discussed married life, Holland finally acknowledged their wedding during an interview with Esquire. Asked whether family members had been fooled by AI-generated wedding photos circulating online, he replied: "No, because they were all there."

When pressed for more details, Holland simply added: "That's all you'll get on that."

The understated confirmation came months after Zendaya's longtime stylist Law Roach revealed that the couple had already tied the knot.

Their determination to keep the wedding private is consistent with what Holland has said about their relationship for years.

"Our relationship is something that we are incredibly protective of and we want to keep as sacred as possible," Holland previously told The Hollywood Reporter. "We don't think that we owe it to anyone. It's our thing, and it has nothing to do with our careers."

The pair first met during auditions for Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2016 and spent years insisting they were simply close friends. Their romance was confirmed in 2021 after they were photographed kissing in Los Angeles, an experience both later described as invasive.

Holland admitted to GQ that they felt "robbed of our privacy," while Zendaya said the attention surrounding the photos was "strange and weird and confusing and invasive."

Since then, the actors have carefully balanced public appearances with strict personal boundaries. They rarely discuss their relationship in interviews and largely avoid sharing details of their life together, despite becoming one of Hollywood's most followed couples.

Zendaya has previously explained that being with someone who understands the realities of acting has strengthened their relationship.

"There's just certain things in our lives that's hard for people to understand if they don't live it," she said, noting that Holland instinctively understands the demands of her career.

Holland has been equally complimentary, calling Zendaya "arguably the most talented person I've ever met" and saying he feels "lucky" to have her in his life.

On The New York Times' Modern Love podcast earlier this year, Zendaya also reflected on the moment she realised Holland was the person she wanted to spend her life with.

Recalling their first chemistry read for Spider-Man, she said Holland immediately made her feel calm despite her nerves. Years later, she recognised that the feeling had only grown stronger.

"I don't feel nervous, I feel really peaceful and I feel really calm. I actually feel more nervous when I'm away from you than when I'm with you."

Although the couple understand the public fascination with their relationship, Zendaya has said maintaining boundaries is essential.

She acknowledged that fans have developed a "parasocial investment" in their romance after watching them fall in love on screen but stressed that some moments are meant to remain private.

Rather than hiding their relationship, she explained, they simply want to preserve parts of it for themselves, their families and their closest friends.

For Holland and Zendaya, that meant letting the wedding happen quietly—away from cameras, headlines and social media—and confirming it only when they were ready.
