Brenda Fricker, the acclaimed Irish actress who became the first Irish performer to win an Academy Award and later won the hearts of millions as the Pigeon Lady in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, has died at the age of 81.

Fricker died peacefully in Dublin following a period of ill health, her agent, Phil Belfield, confirmed. Paying tribute, Belfield described the actress as "an extraordinary talent" whose work touched audiences around the world.

Born in Dublin in 1945, Fricker began her career in the 1960s before establishing herself as one of Ireland's most respected actresses across film, television and theatre. She made history in 1990 when she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Bridget Fagan Brown, the devoted mother of Christy Brown, played by Daniel Day-Lewis, in My Left Foot. The victory made her the first Irish actress to receive an Oscar.

While her Oscar-winning performance cemented her place in cinema history, Fricker also became beloved by a new generation of audiences through her role as the kind-hearted Pigeon Lady in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992), where she befriended Macaulay Culkin's Kevin McCallister. The performance remains one of the most memorable parts of the Christmas classic.

Her distinguished career included acclaimed performances in The Field, A Time to Kill, So I Married an Axe Murderer, Angels in the Outfield, A Man of No Importance and Omagh. Television viewers also knew her for playing Megan Roach in the BBC medical drama Casualty.

In later years, Fricker largely stepped away from the spotlight. During a candid 2020 interview, she spoke openly about loneliness, admitting she often found the festive season difficult and felt a personal connection to the isolated Pigeon Lady she portrayed in Home Alone 2.

Following news of her death, tributes poured in from across the entertainment industry. My Left Foot director Jim Sheridan remembered Fricker as a formidable talent and an important figure in Irish cinema, while fans celebrated a body of work that spanned more than six decades and left an enduring mark on both Irish and international film.

Fricker's legacy extends far beyond her awards. From her powerful dramatic performances to her unforgettable turn as the compassionate Pigeon Lady, she leaves behind a catalogue of work that continues to resonate with audiences around the world.
