Sophie Simnett to star in Chaplin-inspired silent comedy 'The Candidate'

Sophie Simnett joins 'The Candidate', a black-and-white silent comedy inspired by the classic Chaplin era

Sophie Simnett has joined the cast of The Candidate, an upcoming black-and-white silent comedy that pays tribute to the classic filmmaking style of the Charlie Chaplin era.

The British actress, known for her roles in Netflix’s Daybreak and the crime feature Twist, will star opposite writer and actor Jack Whittle in the feature film. The Candidate marks the feature directorial debut of Mark Bell, whose work in physical comedy includes the Olivier Award-winning stage production The Play That Goes Wrong.

According to the filmmakers, The Candidate is a satirical story about a naïve dreamer who unexpectedly rises to a position of power. As he mistakes power for purpose, he gradually loses sight of what truly matters. Beneath its comedic style, the film explores themes of leadership, responsibility and the qualities people value in those who govern.

Simnett will portray a character named Love, described as a tribute to the leading women of silent cinema. The role is expected to bring warmth, humour and emotional depth to the film while serving as the moral centre of its political satire.

The production will also feature an original musical score composed by Howard Goodall, whose previous credits include Blackadder and Mr Bean. The score is designed to complement the silent storytelling style.

Produced by Over The Fence Films, The Candidate is scheduled to begin production in autumn 2026.

Alongside the new project, Simnett has several upcoming films in development, including Falling, Everybody Wants to F— Me and Scorn, further expanding her growing list of film credits.
