HD Carlton's bestselling novel Haunting Adeline is officially being adapted into a film, ending years of speculation surrounding the controversial BookTok phenomenon. The announcement was confirmed by the author.
Carlton revealed on social media that "Haunting Adeline is getting a movie", marking the first confirmed adaptation of the novel.
No studio, director, cast or release date has been announced, and it remains unclear whether the project is intended for cinemas or a streaming platform.
The novel, the first instalment in Carlton's Cat and Mouse Duet, has gained a large online following while generating debate over its graphic themes and whether they could be adapted for the screen.
The announcement follows years of fan-made trailers, casting rumours and false claims that a Netflix adaptation was already in production.
Haunting Adeline follows author Adeline Reilly after she moves into her late grandmother's gothic mansion, where she discovers she is being watched by Zade Meadows, a vigilante who targets human traffickers while becoming dangerously obsessed with her.
The sequel, Hunting Adeline, continues the story after the first book's cliffhanger and explores darker subject matter, including abduction, human trafficking, sexual violence and trauma.
According to reports, those themes could present significant challenges for a faithful screen adaptation and may require careful handling during production.
It has not been confirmed whether the adaptation includes rights to both novels or only Haunting Adeline. However, given that the two books tell a continuous story, a successful first film could pave the way for an adaptation of Hunting Adeline.
