Who will be recast as Kratos in 'God of War'? Prime Video suffers setback after Ryan Hurst injured on set

Production is expected to resume by mid-autumn once a replacement for Hurst has been cast

Prime Video will recast the lead role of Kratos in its upcoming God of War television adaptation after actor Ryan Hurst suffered an on-set injury.

Hurst had been cast as Kratos, the central character in the adaptation of the PlayStation video game franchise, and Prime Video released a first-look image of the actor in the role earlier this year.

However, production encountered a setback in June after Hurst was injured while filming.

Prime Video declined to comment on the development, which was first reported by Deadline. Hurst is already familiar to fans of the franchise, having voiced the Norse god Thor in the video game God of War: Ragnarok.

The recasting means a new actor will take over the role of Kratos opposite Callum Vinson, who plays his young son Atreus, with previously filmed scenes expected to be reshot.

The cast also includes Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka as Brok and Sindri, and Ed Skrein as Baldur.

Production is expected to resume by mid-autumn once a replacement for Hurst has been cast.

The series follows the story of the two most recent God of War games, focusing on Kratos and his ten-year-old son Atreus as they journey to scatter the ashes of Faye while confronting gods from Norse mythology.

According to the official logline, “Father and son Kratos and Atreus embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.”

Amazon has already ordered two seasons of God of War.

Ronald D. Moore serves as writer, executive producer and showrunner, with the series produced by Sony Pictures Television, Amazon MGM Studios, PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions.
