Disco Bakery flyover stalls before take-off
Karachi's proposed Disco Bakery flyover has run into controversy even before construction begins, with concerns raised over the upcoming K-IV water pipeline project, ongoing urban transport works and existing encroachments along the busy corridor.
Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab had announced that work on the flyover would begin from August 14 and that the project would be completed within 90 days. However, objections have emerged over the timing of the project, with officials and citizens questioning whether construction should proceed before the laying of the K-IV pipeline.
Officials of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Services Improvement Project (KWSSIP) have reportedly expressed concerns, saying a 96-inch K-IV (R-2) water line is planned along the same route where the flyover is proposed.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, officials said the K-IV pipeline would be laid from Abul Hassan Isphahani Road towards Disco Bakery and then up to Gulshan Chowrangi. The work would require excavation of the road to a depth of around six to eight feet, along with additional space on both sides, affecting the entire corridor.
They questioned the feasibility of starting flyover construction before completion of the pipeline work, saying the future excavation could also affect the flyover structure and create further difficulties for commuters. Sources said KMC officials and Water Corporation authorities are scheduled to hold a meeting to discuss possible issues related to the Disco Bakery flyover project and address concerns before construction begins.
