Netflix finds its Lucy as Sophie Nélisse joins 'This Summer Will Be Different' adaptation
Sophie Nélisse is set to star in Netflix’s upcoming romantic drama series This Summer Will Be Different, an adaptation of Carley Fortune’s bestselling novel of the same name.
The project marks one of the actress’s biggest roles following her appearances in Heated Rivalry and Yellowjackets.
The Netflix series will begin production later this summer in Prince Edward Island and Toronto. Created by Dane Clark and Linsey Stewart, This Summer Will Be Different is described as a sun-soaked romance that unfolds across multiple summers on Prince Edward Island.
The story follows Lucy, a young woman navigating her twenties and experiencing her first true love with the one person she was never supposed to fall for — her best friend’s brother. Nélisse will portray Lucy, one of the three central characters alongside Lucy’s best friend Bridget and Bridget’s brother Felix.
Based on Carley Fortune’s 2024 New York Times bestselling novel, This Summer Will Be Different became a major literary success, selling more than four million copies worldwide and being translated into 30 languages.
The adaptation joins Netflix’s expanding Canadian content lineup, which includes series such as North of North, Wayward, Who Killed the Montreal Expos?, BELOW and The Granville Girls.
Fortune will executive produce the Netflix adaptation alongside creators Dane Clark and Linsey Stewart. Jennifer Kawaja, Elise Cousineau and Samantha Levine will also serve as executive producers through Sphere Media.
Nélisse will next return as Young Shauna in the fourth and final season of Showtime’s Yellowjackets. She previously appeared as Rose Landry in the first season of Heated Rivalry, earning attention for the role.
