Andy Serkis has addressed growing criticism surrounding the casting of The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, responding after questions were raised about why every announced cast member is white.

Speaking in a recent interview with the BBC, Serkis said the upcoming fantasy film would recognise conversations around representation but insisted the production would not cast actors simply to satisfy diversity expectations. His comments arrive as anticipation builds for the latest return to JRR Tolkien's world, with the film scheduled for release on December 17, 2027.

The cast announced so far includes Jamie Dornan, Anya Taylor Joy, Kate Winslet, Lee Pace, Leo Woodall, Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen and Serkis himself, who reprises his iconic role as Gollum. The lack of visible diversity among the announced performers quickly became a topic of discussion across social media and entertainment circles.

Asked directly about the issue, Serkis pointed to Tolkien's literary influences while explaining the creative approach behind the project.

"Tolkien himself was influenced a lot by Norse mythology," he said. "The Shire feels very, very much like a very white... They're not very concerned about what goes on beyond the borders of The Shire, but they know they do not want people coming in."

Serkis acknowledged that criticism exists, adding that the new film "somewhat acknowledges" those concerns. However, he made clear that the production would prioritise what the filmmakers believe serves the story.

"I do not think we will be doing a politically correct just casting for the sake of casting and ticking boxes version of the film. So, it's where relevant basically," he said.

His remarks have reignited discussion surrounding diversity in Tolkien adaptations, a debate that became especially prominent during the release of Amazon's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. That series faced racist backlash from some viewers over its inclusive casting choices.

At the time, original The Lord of the Rings trilogy stars Elijah Wood, Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan publicly supported the series by sharing images promoting inclusivity. Cast members from The Rings of Power also released a joint statement condemning the racism, threats and harassment directed at actors of colour involved in the production.

The statement argued that Tolkien's fictional world represents multiple cultures united against evil and rejected claims that Middle earth should be portrayed as exclusively white.

The project marks Serkis' return to one of cinema's most recognisable fantasy characters, with the actor once again leading a story centred on Gollum.
