63 lives later, Jatoi-Mahar feud ends with Rs185m settlement

A tribal jirga has brokered a settlement between the Jatoi and Mahar clans, ending a years-long bloody feud that claimed at least 63 lives and left 92 people injured, by fixing nearly Rs3 million compensation for each person killed in the conflict.
The jirga was chaired by Pakistan Peoples Party MNA Sardar Ali Gohar Khan Mahar in Sukkur district, with former MNAs Ghaus Bux Mahar and Dr Muhammad Ibrahim Jatoi among those co-chairing the arbitration process.
During the hearings, the jirga established that 33 Mahars and 27 Jatois were killed in the clashes, while three bystanders also lost their lives. Among those injured, 55 belonged to the Mahar clan and 37 to the Jatoi clan.
The arbitration body fixed total compensation of Rs88.3 million for the Mahar clan and Rs96.8 million for the Jatoi clan over the deaths and losses suffered during the feud. As part of the settlement, the jirga directed both tribes to end hostilities permanently and refrain from any further acts of violence.
