The FBI is offering a $15,000 reward for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible for the death of a newborn whose body was discovered at Michigan's Electric Forest music festival.
The infant was found on June 28 inside a portable toilet in the festival's camping area at the Double JJ Resort in Rothbury, Michigan. The discovery was made by a maintenance worker servicing the restroom on the final day of the four-day event.
According to Michigan State Police, preliminary autopsy findings determined that the baby was born alive and was viable, making the death the focus of an active criminal investigation.
On Monday, the FBI's Detroit Field Office announced it had joined the investigation and would provide a reward of up to $15,000 for information that helps identify, arrest and convict those responsible.
Investigators previously interviewed a woman from Muskegon who attended the festival after receiving information that she may have been connected to the case. Authorities later confirmed she was fully cooperative and has since been eliminated as a suspect. Police have urged the public not to spread misinformation or identify individuals online without evidence.
Michigan State Police said they remain confident that forensic evidence and continued investigative work will ultimately identify the person responsible.
"Investigators believe there are individuals with important information relevant to this case who may be reluctant to come forward," police said in a statement.
Electric Forest, one of North America's largest electronic music festivals, attracted tens of thousands of attendees over its four-day run. Detectives are reviewing tips, surveillance footage and other evidence gathered from the event as the investigation continues.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Michigan State Police, the FBI's Detroit Field Office or submit a tip through the FBI's online reporting system. Authorities say even seemingly minor details could prove crucial to solving the case.
