‘It Ends With Us’ turns 10 as Colleen Hoover marks milestone with powerful donation pledge
Signed anniversary editions will fund domestic violence shelters, honouring novel inspired by personal family history

The milestone anniversary of Colleen Hoover's bestselling novel It Ends With Us is being marked with a charitable initiative that reflects the book's central message. To celebrate 10 years since the novel's publication in 2016, Hoover announced that she will personalise signed copies of the book and donate 100% of the profits to shelters supporting survivors of domestic violence.
The author shared the announcement on Instagram, revealing that proceeds from the special editions will go directly to organisations helping people escape abusive relationships. The decision ties closely to the subject matter of It Ends With Us, which follows florist Lily Bloom as she struggles to leave an abusive marriage while confronting painful memories from her childhood and reconnecting with her first love, Atlas Corrigan.
The novel quickly became one of Hoover's most successful works, earning worldwide popularity before finding an even larger audience through online book communities. Its success eventually led to a sequel, It Starts With Us, published in 2022, continuing Lily and Atlas's story after the events of the original novel.
It Ends With Us also reached cinema audiences through its 2024 film adaptation starring Blake Lively as Lily Bloom, Justin Baldoni as Ryle Kincaid, Brandon Sklenar as Atlas Corrigan, alongside Jenny Slate and Hasan Minhaj. The adaptation introduced the story to an even broader audience while renewing conversations about domestic abuse and unhealthy relationships.
Hoover has previously explained that the novel was inspired by experiences within her own family. During a 2023 interview with Jenna Bush Hager on Today, the author described witnessing domestic violence as a young child before her mother eventually left the relationship. Hoover said one of her earliest memories involved her father throwing a television at her mother, adding that her mother later became a strong and independent role model after leaving the abusive marriage.
The author has often spoken about the emotional response readers have had to the novel. She acknowledged that while its continued success has been remarkable, it is rooted in a difficult reality that resonates with many people because domestic violence remains a widespread issue affecting countless families.
By directing every dollar of profit from the signed anniversary editions to domestic violence shelters, Hoover is using one of publishing's biggest modern success stories to support organisations providing safety, housing and practical assistance for survivors rebuilding their lives.
