Tom Holland finally met the other well known Tom Holland, leading to an amusing conversation about the unexpected consequences of sharing exactly the same name. The actor appeared on historian and author Tom Holland's The Rest Is History podcast, where the pair discussed The Odyssey before joking about the online confusion that has followed them for years.

The meeting came shortly after both men attended the London premiere of Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey earlier this month without crossing paths. Their eventual conversation delighted fans, particularly after historian Tom Holland had previously sparked confusion on social media by praising the film, prompting many users to assume the comments had come from the actor who stars in the epic.

The podcast opened with a playful moment as both men briefly debated who should occupy the seat labelled "Tom Holland". After recreating the famous Spider Man pointing meme, the historian introduced his guest as "the real Tom Holland". The actor quickly interrupted with a smile, insisting, "Not the real Tom Holland. The other Tom Holland."

The discussion soon turned towards the impact the actor's global fame has had on internet searches. Historian Tom Holland joked that his ability to search for himself online had effectively disappeared after the younger Tom became an international film star. Responding with good humour, the actor apologised, saying, "I'm sorry, Tom." The historian laughed off the issue, explaining that he rarely searched for himself anyway.

The light hearted exchange followed recent online reactions after historian Tom Holland praised The Odyssey on X, describing it as the finest cinematic adaptation of a Greek myth he had ever seen. Many readers initially assumed the post had been written by the film's star, with some joking that he was promoting his own work. Others even suggested that a meeting between the two Tom Hollands might "implode" the universe. The historian playfully hinted that something was already being planned, which ultimately led to the special podcast episode.

Beyond the jokes, the conversation focused heavily on Christopher Nolan's adaptation of Homer's classic poem. Tom Holland, who portrays Telemachus, explained that condensing such a vast literary work into a single feature film required remarkable storytelling discipline. He praised Nolan's screenplay for preserving the emotional core of the ancient epic while making it accessible to modern audiences.

The actor also shared his interpretation of the story, explaining that Telemachus and Penelope represent the grounded reality of the narrative, while Odysseus' journey reflects the legendary mythology that has evolved through generations of storytelling. According to Holland, Nolan deliberately embraced that contrast by allowing the mythical elements to stretch beyond strict historical realism.

The Odyssey, starring Matt Damon as Odysseus and Tom Holland as Telemachus, arrives in cinemas on July 17.
