Steven Spielberg has paid an emotional tribute to Sam Neill following the acclaimed actor's death at the age of 78, remembering his longtime collaborator as an exceptionally generous performer whose legacy will endure through generations of film fans.

Neill, whose career spanned more than five decades, became one of cinema's most recognisable faces through his portrayal of Dr Alan Grant in Jurassic Park. His performance in Steven Spielberg's groundbreaking 1993 blockbuster introduced audiences to the reluctant palaeontologist whose intelligence, courage and dry humour became central to one of Hollywood's most successful franchises.

In a statement, Spielberg reflected on how Neill first caught his attention through several earlier films, including Sleeping Dogs, My Brilliant Career, The Final Conflict and Dead Calm. The director credited those performances with convincing him that Neill was the ideal choice to lead Jurassic Park.

Spielberg also praised Neill's professionalism throughout their collaborations, describing him as "exceptionally collaborative." He noted that Neill's character initially appeared uncomfortable around children, making the performance particularly impressive because it contrasted sharply with the actor's real personality as a devoted father.

The filmmaker added that working alongside Neill across the Jurassic films created lasting friendships, saying he, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum would always remain part of their shared Jurassic family. Spielberg concluded his tribute by saying Neill would never be forgotten by either those who worked with him or the millions of fans who admired his work around the world.

Neill's family confirmed that his death was sudden and unexpected. They also revealed that he remained cancer free at the time of his passing. The actor had publicly disclosed in 2023 that he had been diagnosed with stage 3 angioimmunoblastic T cell lymphoma during 2022 and had undergone treatment. Earlier in 2026, he shared the encouraging news that he was free of cancer, making news of his death even more surprising to many supporters.

Tributes quickly poured in from across the entertainment industry. Jurassic World Dominion director Colin Trevorrow remembered Neill as a deeply soulful man whose calm presence and quiet strength inspired everyone around him. Trevorrow also spoke warmly of the actor's love of wine and the confidence he brought to every role, calling it a privilege to have known him personally.

Beyond Jurassic Park, Neill built one of the most respected careers in international cinema and television. His credits included acclaimed films such as Possession, The Hunt for Red October and the Academy Award winning The Piano. Television audiences also embraced his performances in Reilly, Ace of Spies, Merlin, The Tudors and Peaky Blinders, demonstrating his remarkable versatility across genres.

Throughout his career, Neill earned admiration for portraying intelligent, complex and often quietly heroic characters. Whether leading major Hollywood productions or appearing in acclaimed independent projects, he consistently delivered performances marked by warmth, depth and authenticity.
