Marvel fans mourn as ‘Daredevil’ star Wai Ching Ho passes away

Veteran actor Wai Ching Ho, best known as Madame Gao in Marvel's 'Daredevil', has passed away after a stroke

Veteran actor Wai Ching Ho, best known for portraying the enigmatic Madame Gao in Marvel's Daredevil, Iron Fist and The Defenders, has died at the age of 83.

Her death was confirmed by a representative, who shared a statement from her family thanking fans for their support and the heartfelt tributes that have poured in following the news. Ho reportedly died peacefully after suffering a stroke on July 10.

"Her family are deeply grateful for the incredible outpouring of love and support and the many beautiful messages and memories people have shared about our beloved Wai," the statement read. "Reading how much she meant to so many is comforting to us during this difficult time."

Born in Hong Kong in 1943, Ho built a career spanning more than three decades across film, television and voice acting. She made her American film debut in the 1990 comedy Cadillac Man alongside Robin Williams before appearing in films including Soapdish, The Sorcerer's Apprentice, Hustlers and Pixar's Turning Red, in which she voiced Grandma Wu.

On television, Ho appeared in numerous popular series, including One Life to Live, Flight of the Conchords and Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens. However, she became widely recognized by Marvel fans for her portrayal of Madame Gao, a mysterious and powerful crime leader who appeared across several Netflix Marvel series.

Her credits also extended to video games, including a voice role in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

Remembered for her warmth, talent and commanding screen presence, Wai Ching Ho leaves behind a legacy that spanned stage, screen and voice acting, earning admiration from colleagues and audiences alike.
