KARACHI:

City Mayor Murtaza Wahab on Sunday inaugurated the long-defunct Mir Muhammad Baloch Water Pumping Station, bringing it back online after more than three decades to improve water supply for over 300,000 residents.

The restoration is expected to ease chronic water shortages in Saddar Town, Lyari and the Old City Area, including neighbourhoods such as Kharadar, Mithadar, Ranchore Line, Jodia Bazaar and adjoining localities.

Speaking at the inauguration, Mayor Wahab, who also heads the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC), said the facility, established in 1991 during the tenure of then mayor Dr Farooq Sattar, remained non-operational due to the lack of a permanent electricity connection.

"For over 30 years, residents suffered because this project was never made functional," he said.

KWSC officials said the rehabilitation included civil repairs, overhaul of pumping machinery, rewinding of three 125-horsepower motors, installation of low-tension cables, laying of a 12-inch pipeline, and provision of a modern electrical panel along with a permanent power supply.
