Dan Trachtenberg’s Freddy the 13th animated horror comedy sets 2028 release date
Dan Trachtenberg’s upcoming animated horror comedy based on Freddy the 13th has officially received a release date from Paramount Animation.
The untitled project, inspired by Yehudi Mercado’s indie comic, is scheduled to arrive in theaters on Friday, October 13, 2028.
The announcement follows the film’s reveal at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, where Paramount Animation introduced the family-friendly horror project. The movie will be directed by Dan Trachtenberg, known for films including 10 Cloverfield Lane and Predator: Badlands, with Mercado serving as co-director.
The animated horror comedy will follow an unusual family adventure centered on Uncle Freddy, whose vacation takes a dark turn when he accidentally defeats the Boogeyman and gains his powers. The story blends supernatural elements, comedy, and family themes as Freddy faces the consequences of his unexpected transformation.
Paramount Animation has described the film as a PG-rated horror movie designed to deliver both scares and laughs for audiences of all ages. The project aims to offer a lighter take on the horror genre while introducing a new animated world inspired by Mercado’s comic series.
Trachtenberg will also produce the film alongside his longtime collaborator Ben Rosenblatt. The upcoming project marks another major collaboration between the filmmaker and Paramount following his recent agreement with the studio’s animation division.
The Freddy the 13th adaptation is part of Paramount Animation’s growing lineup of original and genre-focused projects. With its unusual mix of horror and comedy, the film is expected to appeal to families, animation fans, and viewers looking for a fresh twist on supernatural storytelling.
More details about the voice cast, production updates, and trailer release are expected to be announced closer to the film’s 2028 theatrical debut.
