Bonnie Tyler left behind one of the most successful careers in British music, with the Welsh singer becoming an international star through timeless hits including “Total Eclipse of the Heart”, “Holding Out for a Hero”, “It’s a Heartache” and “Lost in France”.
According to reports, Tyler's net worth was widely estimated at $40 million at the time of her death.
The fortune was accumulated over more than five decades through record sales, worldwide touring, music licensing, royalties and property investments.
Born Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen, Wales, Tyler rose to prominence in the late 1970s before achieving global fame in 1983 with “Total Eclipse of the Heart”, written and produced by Jim Steinman.
The song topped charts in both the United States and the United Kingdom, becoming one of the defining power ballads of the decade.
Her catalogue remained a major source of income throughout her career. Her songs continued generating revenue through streaming, film and television placements, advertising, licensing and live performances decades after their original release.
Tyler also maintained a successful touring career, particularly across Europe, while collaborations with artists including Mike Oldfield, Rick Wakeman, Robin Gibb and Vince Gill expanded her commercial success.
A bilingual version of “Total Eclipse of the Heart” with French singer Kareen Antonn reached No. 1 in France and Belgium in 2003.
Property investments also formed part of Tyler's wealth, with she and her husband, Robert Sullivan, linked to homes in Portugal and the United Kingdom.
Although “Total Eclipse of the Heart” surpassed one billion Spotify streams in 2026, Tyler had previously said streaming generated relatively little personal income, reflecting wider concerns over royalty payments for legacy artists.
Alongside her commercial success, she earned Grammy nominations, represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013 and was appointed an MBE for services to music
