David Chase opens up about potential post-Sopranos passion project

David Chase reveals plans for a new film or TV series following Italian Americans relocating to Italy for a fresh star

The Sopranos creator David Chase has revealed that he is considering a new film or television project centered on Italian Americans relocating to Italy, drawing inspiration from a growing trend of Americans purchasing affordable homes in the country.

Speaking during an industry discussion at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, the Emmy-winning writer and producer said he is interested in telling the story of Italian Americans who return to their ancestral homeland in search of a different life. Chase noted that many abandoned towns in Italy have been selling homes at low prices, attracting buyers from the United States.

According to Chase, the project would follow four Italian American characters as they move to Italy, where they encounter unexpected experiences while reconnecting with their heritage. He added that the idea reflects the increasing number of Americans choosing to relocate abroad, describing the concept as timely.

Chase also expressed interest in reuniting with actors John Magaro, Jack Huston, Will Brill and Bella Heathcote, who starred in his 2012 coming-of-age drama Not Fade Away. While he clarified that the potential collaboration would not revisit the same story, he said he would like to work with the cast again on a different project.

The filmmaker continues to develop new projects following the enduring success of The Sopranos. In 2025, HBO announced that Chase was working on Project: MKUltra, a series based on John Lisle's book Project Mind Control: Sidney Gottlieb, the CIA, and the Tragedy of MKUltra. The drama will explore the life of CIA chemist Sidney Gottlieb and the controversial Cold War-era mind control program.

Although no official announcement has been made regarding the Italy-based project, Chase's comments have generated interest among fans eager to see his next television or film venture.
