'Terminator 2' returns in 4K and 3D for global anniversary release
Terminator 2: Judgment Day is returning to cinemas worldwide to celebrate its 35th anniversary, with StudioCanal, Fathom Entertainment and Rialto Pictures announcing a global re-release beginning in late August.
The James Cameron-directed sci-fi classic will return to theatres in 4K, RealD 3D and other premium formats, giving audiences the opportunity to experience one of cinema's most influential action films on the big screen once again. The US release is scheduled for 28 August, while international screenings will begin on 27 August in Germany, Latin America and the Czech Republic before expanding to additional markets, including Italy and Poland.
The re-release also coincides with the film's fictional "Judgment Day" date of 29 August, a key moment in the Terminator franchise's timeline.
Released in 1991, Terminator 2: Judgment Day remains the highest-grossing film in the franchise, earning more than $517 million at the global box office. Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, Edward Furlong and Robert Patrick, the blockbuster received widespread critical acclaim and won four Academy Awards, including Best Visual Effects, Best Makeup, Best Sound and Best Sound Effects Editing.
James Cameron said the restored version was designed for cinemas, adding that the remastered 3D presentation offers the definitive way to experience the film. He also joked that, after 35 years, spoilers no longer mattered, noting that "the good guys win against the AI superintelligence" while suggesting the film's ending still offers a hopeful message.
The anniversary release will use StudioCanal's 2017 restoration and 3D conversion, allowing longtime fans and new audiences alike to revisit the landmark action film in enhanced picture and sound quality.
The worldwide theatrical event celebrates the enduring legacy of Terminator 2: Judgment Day, widely regarded as one of the greatest sci-fi action films ever made.
