Na Hong-jin's 'Hope' unveils new trailer following Cannes controversy

Hope's new trailer teases Na Hong-jin's alien thriller ahead of its July debut and September US release

A new international trailer has been released for Hope, the highly anticipated sci-fi horror film from acclaimed South Korean filmmaker Na Hong-jin, offering audiences a closer look at the director's ambitious creature feature ahead of its theatrical release.

The film premiered in competition at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, where it sparked sharply divided reactions from critics and audiences. While some praised its bold vision and large-scale action, others questioned its unconventional style, making Hope one of the festival's most talked-about titles.

Set in the fictional coastal community of Hope Harbor near the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), the story begins when authorities investigate reports of a tiger roaming the area. However, what appears to be a routine wildlife incident quickly escalates into a terrifying mystery after hostile alien creatures emerge, forcing residents into a desperate fight for survival.

The film stars Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung and Jung Ho-yeon in leading roles, with Taylor Russell, Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender making special appearances as alien characters. The newly released trailer showcases large-scale action sequences, intense creature attacks and suspenseful confrontations across forests and the isolated harbour town.

Hope is written and directed by Na Hong-jin, whose previous films include The Chaser, The Yellow Sea and The Wailing. The project was produced by Na Hong-jin and Kim Sae-mi under Forged Films and Plus M Entertainment.

The film will open in South Korean cinemas on July 15, before expanding to US theatres on September 9, where it will be distributed by Neon. Following its divisive Cannes debut, Hope is expected to be one of the year's most closely watched international genre releases.
