Tom Holland reveals 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' tribute to Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield
"We kind of created a spider-child of all three costumes," Holland says in a bts featurette

Tom Holland has revealed that Spider-Man's new suit in Spider-Man: Brand New Day was deliberately designed as a tribute to the versions of the web-slinger portrayed by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, carrying forward the legacy of Spider-Man: No Way Home.
In a behind-the-scenes featurette released by Sony Pictures, Holland explained that the creative team wanted Peter Parker's latest costume to reflect the fact that his character had met the other two Spider-Men in the multiverse.
"When we decided that we were gonna make Spider-Man: Brand New Day, we said: 'What if we made a suit that was an homage to Tobey's and Andrew's designs?' Because now my Peter Parker had met those guys. So, we kind of created a spider-child of all three costumes."
The subtle nod serves as an in-universe Easter egg, suggesting that Peter consciously incorporated elements of Maguire's and Garfield's costumes into his own after fighting alongside them in No Way Home. Fans have already pointed to the raised webbing, larger chest emblem and classic red-and-blue colour palette as visual callbacks to the earlier Spider-Man films.
Director Destin Daniel Cretton said the new costume was also intended to feel more grounded and practical than some of Spider-Man's previous high-tech MCU suits.
"The result of that is this suit that I think is beautiful in its simplicity. The suit does have a bit of a tactile feel to it. We are embracing the folds and the wrinkles. When it moves, it's actually material. And you can see the human beneath the material," Cretton explained.
Holland added that the redesign also reflects Peter's return to his roots following the events of No Way Home, when the world forgot his identity and he was forced to build his own equipment without the resources of the Avengers or Stark Industries.
"Everything had to fit into the world of Peter Parker, and we went back to that dumpster-diver kid who's retrofitting old tech. It gave a real purpose to why the suit looks the way it does," the actor said.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day marks Holland's fourth standalone outing as the Marvel hero and is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. The film also stars Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo and Michael Mando. It is scheduled to swing into cinemas on July 31, 2026.
