Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' trailer becomes most disliked since Disney's live-action 'Snow White'

Much of the criticism has centred on the film's casting, particularly Lupita Nyong'o's portrayal of Helen of Troy

Christopher Nolan's highly anticipated epic The Odyssey has become the subject of online debate after its latest trailer reportedly emerged as the most disliked major Hollywood trailer since Disney's Snow White.

The latest preview for the film, which is due to arrive in cinemas on July 17, has attracted widespread discussion over its casting, dialogue and historical interpretation.

According to reports, the trailer has received more than 338,000 dislikes against 55,000 likes, making it the most negatively received trailer of Nolan's career.

However, YouTube removed public dislike counts in 2021, meaning the figures are based on browser extensions and should not be regarded as official YouTube data.

The reported backlash marks a significant departure from the reception of trailers for Nolan's previous films, including Oppenheimer and Tenet, which were largely met with positive audience reactions.

Much of the criticism has centred on the film's casting, particularly Lupita Nyong'o's portrayal of Helen of Troy.

Some critics questioned the casting choice, while others argued over the adaptation's interpretation of Homer's ancient Greek epic. The debate has also drawn racist comments online alongside discussions about historical accuracy.

Another point of contention has been dialogue featured in the trailer. A line referencing "pining for a daddy" quickly circulated across social media, with some viewers arguing the language felt too modern for a story rooted in ancient Greek mythology.

Others also questioned the use of American accents, costume design and armour, while some criticised the online trailer's visual quality despite the film's emphasis on the IMAX format.

Comparisons have also been drawn with Disney's live-action Snow White, whose trailers generated significant online backlash before release.

While both films have attracted substantial criticism online, coordinated dislike campaigns and unofficial metrics make direct comparisons difficult.

Despite the controversy, The Odyssey remains one of Hollywood's biggest releases of 2026.

The film stars Matt Damon alongside Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Charlize Theron and Lupita Nyong'o.

It is also the first feature film to be shot entirely with IMAX film cameras, with Nolan describing the production as a long-held creative ambition.

Whether the online reaction reflects wider audience opinion will become clearer when the film opens in cinemas later this month.
