Trump hijacks Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce wedding spotlight
An edited image shared during the New York celebrations prompted swift reactions across social media

President Donald Trump and the White House drew widespread attention on July 3 after the official White House X account shared a post that appeared to capitalise on the media spotlight surrounding Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's wedding in New York City.
The post was published shortly after giant digital displays outside Madison Square Garden lit up with the message "JUST&T MARRIED", celebrating the newlyweds following their ceremony. Around 10 minutes later, the official White House account shared an edited version of the scene in which the original wedding message had been replaced with the words "DONALD TRUMP IS YOUR PRESIDENT". The accompanying caption read, "IT'S HAPPENED!!"
The timing of the post quickly fuelled discussion across social media, with supporters praising the administration's humour while critics accused the White House of attempting to divert attention from one of the year's biggest entertainment events. The image rapidly circulated across X, prompting users to create their own edited versions featuring political messages and satirical responses.
The social media post followed another White House upload a day earlier that referenced Taylor Swift using imagery inspired by her ERAS TOUR. That earlier post also attracted significant online attention as it blended political messaging with pop culture references.
Trump himself spent much of July 3 in South Dakota, where he delivered remarks at Mount Rushmore as part of America's 250th anniversary celebrations. His appearance was briefly delayed by severe weather before he addressed supporters, speaking about foreign policy, domestic issues and his administration's priorities.
During his speech, Trump repeated his belief that Iran wanted to negotiate with the United States and also criticised what he described as a growing communist influence in American politics. He again spoke about achievements that he believes warranted greater international recognition, including remarks about the Nobel Peace Prize.
Meanwhile, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce celebrated their wedding at Madison Square Garden following several days of festivities in New York City. The high profile ceremony attracted approximately 1,000 guests, including celebrities from the worlds of entertainment, music and sport. Extensive security measures, road closures and a significant police presence were put in place around the venue throughout the celebrations.
The combination of the celebrity wedding and the White House's social media activity resulted in both topics dominating online conversation on Friday evening. While many users focused on Swift and Kelce's wedding celebrations, others debated whether it was appropriate for an official government account to insert itself into one of the day's biggest entertainment stories.
Neither Taylor Swift nor Travis Kelce publicly responded to the White House post. Likewise, the White House did not issue any further explanation regarding the timing or intent of the edited image.
