Punjab introduces evidence-based traffic challan system
The Punjab Traffic Police has launched an evidence-based e-challan system across the province, requiring every traffic ticket to be supported by photographic and video evidence in a move aimed at improving transparency, accountability and public confidence in traffic enforcement.
Under the new system, motorists issued a traffic challan will receive an SMS from 8070 containing a link that allows them to view the photographic and video evidence of the alleged traffic violation. According to the Traffic Police, the initiative has been implemented through the Traffic Police One App, enabling traffic wardens to issue challans backed by digital evidence captured at the scene.
DIG Traffic Punjab Waqas Nazir said the new mechanism would make traffic law enforcement more transparent, reduce disputes between motorists and traffic officials, and save time for both the public and law enforcement personnel.
He said the evidence-based system would also strengthen legal proceedings against motorists who fail to pay traffic fines by providing verifiable proof of violations.
"The introduction of this system marks a significant step towards modernising traffic management in Punjab," the DIG said, adding that the department was leveraging technology to ensure fair, efficient and transparent enforcement of traffic laws.
Traffic police officials said the digital evidence system is expected to enhance public trust by allowing motorists to independently verify the basis of traffic challans, while ensuring greater accountability in the enforcement process.
The initiative forms part of the Punjab Traffic Police's broader efforts to digitise public services and improve the efficiency of traffic management across the province.
