Murder cases expose cracks in crime investigations

Falling crime numbers contrast with public anxiety over unresolved homicide cases

Although official statistics show a decline in the number of murder cases registered in Khanewal district during 2026, a series of high-profile killings and unresolved investigations have heightened public concerns over law and order and raised questions about the effectiveness of police investigations.

According to police figures, 43 murder cases were registered in Khanewal district during the first half of 2026, compared with 60 cases during the corresponding period last year.

While the reduction suggests an overall improvement in crime statistics, several brutal incidents have left residents feeling insecure and demanding quicker justice.

Police records indicate that theft, motorcycle snatching, land disputes, fraud, and violent assaults remain among the most frequently reported crimes in and around Makhdoompur Pahoran.

Officials maintain that police have responded promptly to many incidents, but several sensational murder cases remain under investigation, with suspects yet to be brought to justice.

One of the most shocking incidents occurred in Kot Madina, where armed robbers allegedly entered a house with the intention of committing robbery. The suspects opened fire when the family resisted, killing 34-year-old Farhana Bibi and her 10-year-old son Hassan before fleeing with jewellery and mobile phones.

Two younger children present in the house remained unharmed.

Police registered a case, collected forensic evidence and constituted special investigation teams on the directives of the District Police Officer (DPO). However, despite the passage of several weeks, no official announcement regarding the arrest of the suspects has yet been made.

Another case that attracted widespread attention was the killing of four men near Niazi Chowk in Khanewal.

The victims, Abdul Majeed Khan, Ismail Khan, Hidayatullah Khan and Zakaullah Khan, were travelling to Multan to attend a court hearing when unidentified gunmen ambushed their vehicle and opened indiscriminate fire.

Police believe the attack was linked to a long-standing family feud.

An FIR was registered against one nominated suspect and seven unidentified persons.

Investigators collected forensic evidence, reviewed CCTV footage and recorded witness statements, while the Inspector General of Police ordered the immediate arrest of those responsible. However, no arrests have yet been officially confirmed.

Violence also overshadowed Ashura in Olakh Sindhu, near Sarai Sidhu, where armed men allegedly attacked a family visiting a cemetery to offer prayers at the graves of their relatives.

The assault left Haq Nawaz dead and several others, including Khizar Hayat, Samar Abbas and Azhar Abbas, seriously injured.

Police said preliminary investigations suggested the attack resulted from an earlier dispute that reportedly began during a cricket match between children.
