Sony's decision to stop producing physical PlayStation games from 2028 has prompted widespread criticism from gamers, with some questioning whether they will remain with the platform as the industry continues its shift towards digital distribution.

The announcement has sparked backlash across social media despite digital game sales already accounting for the majority of purchases.

Critics argue that abandoning physical media removes key consumer benefits, including the ability to resell games, lend them to friends and retain permanent ownership of purchased titles.

Many players also expressed concerns about the long-term value of digital purchases, noting that access to downloaded games can be restricted or revoked under certain circumstances.

The announcement led to a wave of reactions online. PlayStation content creator MBG wrote, "#NOTBUYINGPS6 unless it supports physical games."

Another user posted, "There's no reason to stay with PlayStation anymore. After more than 30 years with Sony, I'm switching to PC."

A further comment read, "With no physical games, there isn't a single valid reason to stay with PlayStation instead of buying a PC. Sony has officially killed its own appeal. PC has won."

Another user added, "PS6 gonna be the worst console gen of all time."

The discussion also attracted attention from outside the gaming industry. Domino's Pizza UK joined the debate with a post stating, "Makes about as much sense as us changing to digital pizzas."

According to Metro, Sony has not confirmed whether the PlayStation 6 will launch as an all-digital console.

However, the company's decision to discontinue physical game production has fuelled speculation that future hardware may no longer include support for disc-based games.

The report noted that removing disc drives could help reduce manufacturing costs, particularly as memory prices remain high.

However, the announcement has intensified concerns among collectors and long-time PlayStation users about the future of physical game ownership, with many saying they may instead move to PC gaming platforms.

Last week Rockstar announced GTA 6, which releases on November 19 later this year, will also not launch on disc.
