Queen Camilla has faced criticism on social media after Buckingham Palace released a photograph of her meeting author JK Rowling during PRIDE MONTH, prompting debate over the timing of the engagement because of Rowling's long standing views on transgender issues.
The image, shared on the Royal Family's official Instagram account, showed Queen Camilla and Rowling together during an audience at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh. According to the accompanying caption, the meeting centred on their shared interest in literature and encouraging young people to read.
The Palace said the discussion focused on ensuring children have access to books and highlighted the importance of reading in creating opportunities for future generations. The engagement reflected Queen Camilla's continued support for literacy initiatives, including her long running work promoting reading through charitable projects and public campaigns.
However, the timing of the meeting quickly became a talking point online. The photograph was published during PRIDE MONTH, when many organisations and public figures highlight support for LGBTQ+ communities. Critics argued that featuring Rowling at that time sent an inappropriate message because of her widely publicised views on transgender rights.
Many Instagram users expressed disappointment in the comments beneath the post. Some wrote that they believed there were other authors who could have been highlighted, while others posted messages supporting transgender rights. One commenter described the decision as disappointing, particularly during PRIDE MONTH, while another called the timing a statement in itself.
At the same time, other social media users defended both Queen Camilla and Rowling. Supporters argued that the meeting was about literature and children's reading rather than political issues. Others maintained that Rowling was entitled to express her views and should not be excluded from public engagements because of them.
Rowling has remained at the centre of debate over transgender rights for several years. She has repeatedly stated that biological sex should remain legally and socially significant and has argued that recognising transgender women as women could affect sex based protections for females. Those comments have attracted both strong support and significant criticism.
Her views have also created divisions within the Harry Potter community. Actors including Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson have publicly voiced support for transgender people and distanced themselves from Rowling's position. Other performers connected to the franchise have expressed similar views.
More recently, Rowling criticised several actors who signed an open letter supporting transgender rights following a UK Supreme Court ruling concerning the legal definition of the terms woman and sex under the Equality Act. Rowling responded by accusing some former colleagues of turning against her and said their actions were motivated by fear.
The debate has continued to affect projects linked to the Harry Potter franchise. Earlier this year, actor John Lithgow, who is set to portray Albus Dumbledore in HBO's forthcoming adaptation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, said he had been encouraged by some people to reconsider joining the production because of the controversy surrounding Rowling. Despite acknowledging that he disagreed with some of her views, Lithgow said he believed the creative opportunity outweighed calls for a boycott.
Neither Buckingham Palace nor Queen Camilla has commented on the online reaction beyond the original description of the meeting.
