Christopher Nolan's ‘The Odyssey’ unveils new trailer ahead of July release

Universal continues its major marketing campaign as the star packed adaptation prepares for a worldwide launch

Christopher Nolan's highly anticipated fantasy epic The Odyssey has released a new countdown trailer, offering audiences the most detailed look yet at the filmmaker's adaptation of Homer's ancient Greek tale ahead of its July 17, 2026 theatrical release.

The latest footage, unveiled by Universal Pictures as part of the film's final promotional campaign, expands on the scale, characters and emotional stakes at the centre of the story. Running for approximately two and a half minutes, the trailer highlights the perilous journey undertaken by Odysseus following the Trojan War and previews the challenges awaiting him as he attempts to return home.

Matt Damon leads the cast as Odysseus, the legendary king of Ithaca who embarks on a decade long voyage filled with danger, conflict and mythological threats. The story follows his struggle to reunite with his wife Penelope while restoring order to his kingdom, which has fallen into turmoil during his prolonged absence.

The trailer also places significant focus on Tom Holland's Telemachus, Odysseus' son, who has grown up without his father's presence. Meanwhile, Anne Hathaway portrays Penelope, who finds herself surrounded by powerful suitors seeking to claim the throne of Ithaca.

Among those suitors is Antinous, played by Robert Pattinson. The character appears to serve as one of the film's principal antagonists, leading a faction determined to take control of the kingdom before Odysseus can return. Several scenes in the trailer suggest a growing conflict between Antinous and Telemachus, while also teasing the eventual confrontation between Antinous and the returning king.

The film boasts one of the most star studded ensembles assembled for a major studio production in recent years. Alongside Damon, Holland, Hathaway and Pattinson, the cast includes Zendaya, Charlize Theron and Lupita Nyong'o, among many others. Zendaya is set to portray Athena, the goddess who plays a crucial role in Homer's original epic.

The newly released footage features large scale battles, storm battered seas and dramatic action sequences that reflect Nolan's ambition in bringing the ancient myth to the screen. The trailer culminates with Odysseus declaring, "I defy the gods," a line that underscores the film's themes of fate, perseverance and human determination.

Universal has spent months building anticipation for the project. The first teaser debuted in December 2025 and generated extraordinary online engagement. According to the studio, the teaser attracted more than 121.4 million views across social media platforms within its first 24 hours, setting a new studio record and surpassing the previous benchmark achieved by Wicked: For Good.

In a move that has attracted attention throughout the film industry, Universal has also chosen to limit advance screenings. The studio confirmed that The Odyssey will not hold traditional influencer or word of mouth preview screenings before release. Instead, critics will first see the film following its world premiere in London on July 6, 2026.
