Oscar winner Alicia Vikander has officially joined the cast of Netflix's upcoming limited series Enigma Variations, starring opposite Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

The series is based on the bestselling novel by Call Me By Your Name author André Aciman and is currently in development at the streaming platform.

Written by Amanda Kate Shuman, who also serves as showrunner, and directed by Oliver Hermanus, Enigma Variations follows Paul, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, as he navigates a decade of transformative relationships that shape his identity. The drama explores themes of masculinity, sexuality, love and self-discovery while examining whether people truly recognise lasting love when they find it.

Vikander has been cast as Claire, one of Paul's central love interests. In the original novel, Claire becomes Paul's wife as he moves through relationships with both men and women, making her a significant figure in the story's exploration of modern romance.

The Netflix adaptation is executive produced by Amanda Kate Shuman, Oliver Hermanus, Michael Ellenberg, Christina Malach, Lindsey Springer, André Aciman and Monica Levinson, with Media Res producing the series.

Vikander, who won the Academy Award for The Danish Girl, continues to expand her film and television slate. She recently appeared in The Wizard of the Kremlin alongside Jude Law and made her UK theatre debut in The Lady From the Sea. Her upcoming projects include the science-fiction thriller Hope, The Last Day, The Echo Chamber, and The Worst, in which she stars alongside Jamie Dornan and Keira Knightley.

Netflix has not yet announced a release date for Enigma Variations.
