The second episode of House of the Dragon Season 3 ends with Rhaenyra Targaryen finally taking the Iron Throne, but the long-running civil war shows no sign of reaching its conclusion.
The episode opens in the aftermath of the Battle of the Gullet as Baela returns to Dragonstone with the body of Jacaerys.
Grieving the loss of her second son in the conflict, Rhaenyra questions whether the crown is worth the cost. Daemon's return from Harrenhal helps shift her resolve after he asks, “Will you let them die in vain?” and reveals his visions of the Song of Ice and Fire.
Elsewhere, Rhaena struggles to conceal her identity as Sheepstealer's rider after the dragon's role in the battle. On Driftmark, Alyn, Baela and Addam rescue Corlys Velaryon, who rewards Alyn by recognising him with the Velaryon name.
Meanwhile, Aegon and Larys evade capture after escaping during a clash involving Triarchy forces, with Aegon insisting they travel to Rook's Rest in search of Ser Criston Cole.
In King's Landing, Alicent secretly prepares the city for Rhaenyra's arrival with the support of Commander Largent. She also admits to Helaena, “I made a mistake,” over crowning Aegon, before promising her daughter a happier future.
As Aemond reaches Harrenhal, he kills Simon Strong but is wounded before encountering the mysterious Alys Rivers. Rhaenyra then marches on King's Landing, where the Gold Cloaks back her claim.
After executing Otto Hightower and Lord Jasper, she finally sits on the Iron Throne, only for Alicent and Helaena to arrive moments later, setting the stage for the next chapter of the conflict.
The eight-episode season airs weekly on Sundays on HBO, with the season finale scheduled for August 9, 2026.
