Stardew Valley creator Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone has shared a fresh update on Haunted Chocolatier, explaining why the long-awaited follow-up remains in development more than five years after work on the project began.

Barone revealed Haunted Chocolatier in 2021 after development started in 2020. Although the game still has no release date, he acknowledged that fans have grown frustrated by the lengthy wait.

"I know it’s taking a long time," Barone wrote in a new blog post. "Feels kinda dumb posting this same thing over and over, but that’s the reality."

The developer previously admitted earlier this year that he may have announced the game too early. He said the extended development is the result of continuously refining the game's core systems.

"The things in the game which the player will be interacting with or using very often need to be 'perfect,'" he explained. "They need to be seamless, clear, intuitive, satisfying, aesthetic."

Haunted Chocolatier shares similarities with Stardew Valley, featuring pixel-art visuals, relationship-building and business management. However, instead of running a farm, players will manage a chocolate shop.

Barone has also described the title as "more of an action-RPG compared to Stardew Valley," suggesting combat will play a larger role.

As an example of the game's ongoing refinement, Barone highlighted the recipe book interface used to make chocolates.

He said the feature has undergone repeated adjustments to improve navigation, minimise unnecessary clicks and present information more clearly.

"If all of that is accomplished, then the player is now comfortable while perusing the recipe book," he wrote. "But I want more than just comfort. I want to delight the player."

Alongside work on Haunted Chocolatier, Barone has continued supporting Stardew Valley.

He recently discussed the upcoming 1.7 update, which is expected to introduce two additional marriage candidates, although it also remains without a release date.

Barone ended his latest update by thanking fans for their continued support, writing, "As always, I really appreciate your patience."
