Ratatouille 2 gets disappointing update from director Brad Bird

Brad Bird says Ratatouille 2 isn't needed, while Patton Oswalt remains open if the right story ever emerges

Ratatouille 2 director Brad Bird says sequel isn't needed despite Patton Oswalt's interest

Director Brad Bird has ruled out the possibility of making Ratatouille 2, saying he believes the original Pixar film told a complete story, even as star Patton Oswalt remains open to returning if the right idea ever comes along.

Speaking to Collider, Bird said he has repeatedly turned down suggestions of revisiting the 2007 animated favourite.

"They've made little feints towards that to see how I would react," Bird said, explaining that conversations about a sequel have surfaced over the years. "I'm like, 'No, we told that story.'"

Bird said he feels similarly about another of his acclaimed animated films, The Iron Giant. Although the movie gained a devoted following after its release, he believes its story has also reached a natural conclusion.

According to Bird, audiences often assume that successful or beloved films should automatically receive sequels, but he prefers only to revisit a project if there is a compelling creative reason to do so. He noted that while he can imagine another Incredibles film—Incredibles 3 is currently in development—he does not feel the same about Ratatouille.

Patton Oswalt, who voiced Remy in the Oscar-winning Pixar film, shared a different perspective during an appearance on the Obsessed podcast.

Oswalt said he would "love" to return for a sequel but stressed that it should only happen if Bird develops a story he genuinely wants to tell.

The actor pointed to The Incredibles franchise as an example, noting that Bird only made a sequel after finding the right creative direction. Oswalt added that he would rather wait for an organic idea than see a follow-up developed simply because the original film was successful.

As of now, Pixar has not announced plans for Ratatouille 2, making Bird's comments the clearest indication that a sequel is unlikely unless a new story changes his mind. The Wrap first reported Bird's latest remarks, while Oswalt shared his views on the Obsessed podcast.
