Neon has officially set an October theatrical release date for Fjord, the acclaimed family drama that won the prestigious Palme d’Or at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival.
The highly anticipated film will arrive in cinemas on October 9, positioning it as a major contender in the upcoming awards season.
Directed by acclaimed Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu, Fjord stars Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve as parents in a deeply religious Romanian family who relocate to a remote village in Norway in search of a new life. Their world is turned upside down when school officials notice bruises on one of their children, leading authorities to remove all five children from the family and triggering a complex legal battle.
The film explores themes of cultural differences, parenting, faith, and government intervention, delivering an emotionally charged story that resonated strongly with audiences and critics at Cannes. Mungiu’s latest feature earned widespread praise for its nuanced storytelling and powerful performances, ultimately securing the festival’s top honour.
The release date follows a successful strategy employed by Neon for previous Palme d’Or winners, including Parasite, Anatomy of a Fall, and Anora. Both Parasite and Anora went on to win the Academy Award for Best Picture, further raising expectations for Fjord as a potential Oscar contender.
Mungiu is no stranger to Cannes success. The filmmaker previously won the Palme d’Or for 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days in 2007 and later received awards for Best Screenplay and Best Director for Beyond the Hills and Graduation, respectively.
With its prestigious Cannes victory, acclaimed cast, and strategic fall release, Fjord is already emerging as one of the most closely watched international films of the year.
