Olivia Wilde has addressed long-running rumours surrounding the production of Don't Worry Darling, firmly denying claims that she was involved in a “screaming match” with star Florence Pugh during filming.
In a new interview with The Cut, Wilde said reports of tension on the set of the 2022 psychological thriller were inaccurate. The director and actress stated that she was never absent from production and rejected allegations that her relationship with co-star Harry Styles interfered with her responsibilities on set.
Rumours of behind-the-scenes conflict gained widespread attention ahead of the film’s theatrical release in September 2022. Reports at the time claimed Pugh had become frustrated with Wilde’s alleged absences and that a major argument had taken place between the pair during production. The speculation quickly became one of Hollywood’s most talked-about controversies, overshadowing discussion of the film itself.
Wilde said she wanted to publicly refute the allegations but was advised against responding. According to the filmmaker, she was encouraged to remain silent despite what she described as false narratives gaining traction online and in the media.
Reflecting on the controversy, Wilde said the experience left her feeling disconnected from the public image being created around her. She also noted that staying silent may have unintentionally appeared inauthentic to audiences.
The director’s comments echo statements previously made by members of the Don't Worry Darling production team. In 2022, dozens of crew members issued a joint statement defending Wilde and denying reports of unprofessional behaviour on set. The group described Wilde as an engaged and collaborative director and stated that no screaming match had taken place.
Despite years of speculation surrounding the film, Wilde’s latest comments represent one of her strongest responses yet to the controversy that dominated headlines during the movie’s release.
