House of the Dragon returned for its third season with a premiere centred on the long-awaited Battle of the Gullet, a pivotal clash that leaves Team Black facing a devastating loss as the Targaryen civil war escalates.

The episode resumes shortly after the events of Season 2, with Rhaenyra Targaryen considering Alicent Hightower’s proposal to seize King’s Landing and remove Aegon II from power.

However, those plans are quickly complicated when it is revealed that Aegon, badly injured but alive, has been smuggled out of the Red Keep by Larys Strong. Their escape is cut short when they are intercepted by forces loyal to Rhaenyra, placing the deposed king in enemy hands.

Elsewhere, the conflict intensifies at sea as the Triarchy fleet advances into the Gullet. Lord Corlys Velaryon leads Rhaenyra’s naval forces, supported by Jacaerys Velaryon and Baela Targaryen on dragonback.

As battle erupts, dragons unleash destruction across the fleet, turning the confrontation into one of the largest military engagements seen in the series.

The fighting takes a decisive turn when Rhaena Targaryen’s newly bonded dragon, Sheepstealer, enters the battle. Unable to fully control the wild beast, Rhaena watches as dragonfire strikes both enemy and allied vessels, creating chaos across the battlefield.

The episode concludes with tragedy as Jacaerys and his dragon Vermax are brought down during the battle, dealing a severe blow to Rhaenyra’s cause.

Meanwhile, political tensions continue to grow in King’s Landing, where Alicent attempts to influence Aemond Targaryen as the war enters a new and increasingly dangerous phase.

The eight-episode season airs weekly on Sundays on HBO, with the season finale scheduled for August 9, 2026.
