Poultry prices rise in metropolis
Poultry prices in the city rose sharply this week, increasing the burden on consumers.
The official rate for live chicken was increased by Rs24 per kilogramme to Rs299-313 per kg, though the commodity remained largely unavailable at notified rates across the city. The official price of chicken meat was raised by Rs36 to Rs453 per kg, while retail prices ranged from Rs490 to Rs540 per kg. Boneless chicken continued to fetch steep rates of Rs800-850 per kg in several neighbourhoods.
Vegetable prices also recorded an upward trend, with most perishable items becoming more expensive. Soft-skin new potatoes increased by Rs5 per kg and were fixed at Rs32-35 per kg, but sold at Rs60-80 per kg. Tomato prices rose by Rs55 per kg to Rs120-130 officially, while retail rates ranged between Rs160 and Rs200 per kg. Onion prices increased by Rs15 to Rs80-85 per kg, although they continued to retail at Rs100-120 per kg.
Among kitchen essentials, local garlic prices rose by Rs10 per kg and were fixed at Rs125-130 per kg, but retailed at Rs180-200 per kg. Thai ginger remained unchanged at Rs280-295 but continued to sell at Rs400-450 per kg.
Farm cucumbers registered one of the sharpest increases, rising by Rs40 per kg to Rs95-100 officially, while retail prices ranged from Rs140 to Rs150 per kg. Local cucumbers remained unchanged at Rs47-50 per kg but sold at Rs150-160 per kg. Spinach remained unchanged at Rs23-25 per kg officially, though consumers continued to pay Rs80-100 per kg.
Local zucchini declined by Rs40 per kg and was fixed at Rs66-70 per kg, while retail prices ranged between Rs100 and Rs130.
Local lemon prices fell by Rs40 per kg to Rs135-140 per kg. Luffa remained unchanged at Rs38-40 per kg and sold at Rs80-100 per kg.
Green chilli prices increased by Rs20 per kg to Rs95-100 officially, while retail prices ranged from Rs150 to Rs160.
Cabbage increased by Rs5 per kg to Rs57-60 per kg and sold at Rs120-140 per kg. Chinese carrots remained unchanged at Rs95-100 per kg but retailed at Rs250-300 per kg. Pea prices increased by Rs10 and were officially fixed at Rs172-180 per kg, while retail prices ranged from Rs450 to Rs500 per kg.
Fruit prices also remained significantly above official rates.
Dates remained officially priced between Rs360 and Rs470 per kg but sold at Rs800-2,400 per kg. Jamun was fixed at Rs281-295 but retailed at Rs400-450 per kg.
