Emma Myers, who stars alongside Jenna Ortega in Netflix’s Wednesday, has addressed fan “shipping” culture and said she does not want to be paired romantically with her co-star by audiences.

Myers and Ortega play close friends and roommates Enid Sinclair and Wednesday Addams in the series, but online fan speculation has often extended their on-screen dynamic into real-life interpretations.

Speaking on Great Company with Jamie Laing, Myers said she believes shipping real people creates complications.

“I just think that shipping real people is so dangerous. You get into this gray area where, first of all, you're making people uncomfortable. They feel like they can't interact anymore because of the way that people react. Jenna and I don't really care that much — we're like, whatever, we interact the way we want to interact…I'm less worried about people shipping us and more of the fact that they harass other people who get close to one another because they want us to be together. If anybody else gets close, that's interfering with their ship.”

Myers added that she is more comfortable with fans shipping fictional characters rather than real actors. She also revealed she has stepped back from social media, noting that she no longer reads comments.

The actor will return as Enid Sinclair in Wednesday Season 3, which is currently in production. The second season ended with uncertainty around Enid’s storyline after her transformation into an alpha werewolf.

Myers has also been working on A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, which is expected to conclude after its upcoming third season. She also appeared in A Minecraft Movie, which has grossed more than $960 million worldwide.

Both seasons of Wednesday are currently available to stream on Netflix.
