A tight UK chart race between Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo has sparked debate over whether Swift’s late physical sales push may have blocked Rodrigo from reaching Number 1.
According to Official Charts, Swift’s “I Knew It, I Knew You” retained the top spot after a surge in vinyl and CD shipments in the final days of the chart week. The track finished with 71,000 combined units, narrowly outpacing competitors and securing another week at Number 1.
Midweek projections had initially placed Rodrigo’s “stupid song” as the likely chart leader. However, Swift’s late surge in limited-edition physical formats shifted momentum in the closing stages, ultimately pushing Rodrigo’s track down to Number 2.
Industry observers noted that Swift’s strong physical rollout, including collector CDs and vinyl editions, coincided with the final chart window. The timing has led to fan speculation online that the release strategy may have directly influenced the chart outcome.
Previous online discourse has suggested that Swift’s surprise releases and expanded editions of projects can coincide with major moments from other pop artists, although there is no official confirmation of any competitive intent.
Earlier, Swift released piano and acoustic versions of the Toy Story 5 song on the same day Rodrigo dropped her third studio album, intensifying scrutiny.
Rodrigo still recorded a strong performance, with three tracks from her album you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love entering the Top 5. The album itself also reached Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart, despite the singles chart setback.
She also joined Swift in an exclusive milestone, becoming only the second female artist in Spotify history to achieve more than 80 million streams in a single day for a new album release.
