A fisherman who vanished during what was meant to be a routine day trip has been found alive after spending seven days alone at sea in a tiny aluminium boat.
According to People, the man, believed to be 42-year-old Pone Apiuta, disappeared after setting off from Pukapuka Island in the Cook Islands on June 11, 2026. He had left at around 5 p.m. local time for a fishing trip but failed to return, prompting a large-scale search involving local authorities and New Zealand rescue teams.
The breakthrough came on the morning of June 19, 2026, when a Royal New Zealand Air Force P-8A Poseidon aircraft spotted the missing fisherman drifting in a 13-foot aluminium rowboat in the northern Cook Islands, approximately 2,100 miles north of New Zealand. Images released by rescuers showed the castaway wearing a blue T-shirt, black shorts and a visor while waving to the aircraft and holding a paddle.
Apiuta, who is reportedly a father and an experienced fisherman, had embarked on the trip alone. He was reported overdue in the early hours of June 12, 2026, triggering a multinational search effort. Rough seas and high winds complicated rescue operations, with the Cook Islands Police working alongside New Zealand’s Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre and the Royal New Zealand Air Force to locate him.
Authorities have not yet officially confirmed the man's identity, though details released by rescuers match those reported by local media about Apiuta. Officials have also not disclosed how he managed to survive the week-long ordeal or what condition he was in when found.
His rescue marks a remarkable end to a tense search and adds another extraordinary chapter to stories of survival at sea. Family members and residents of the remote island community had spent days fearing the worst before news emerged that the missing fisherman had been found alive.
Further details about his recovery are expected to be released as authorities continue coordinating efforts to bring him safely home.
