Jason Derulo has responded to criticism surrounding the shark tank installed in his California home, saying he is listening to concerns while evaluating the best course of action for the animals.
The singer addressed the controversy during a recent appearance in Los Angeles after facing backlash over a circular shark tank located in the floor of his living room. The video quickly sparked debate online, with animal welfare advocates questioning whether the enclosure provides a suitable environment for the marine animals. Critics argued that keeping sharks in a residential setting sends the wrong message about exotic animal ownership and animal welfare.
Responding to the criticism, Derulo stated that the sharks currently have more space than they did at the aquarium where they were previously housed. However, he acknowledged the public concerns and said he is considering the most appropriate solution moving forward.
The controversy also drew a response from the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW). Christian Plowman, Program Manager of Wildlife Cybercrime at IFAW, criticised the display, arguing that public figures should avoid promoting the keeping of sharks and other wildlife as status symbols or social media attractions.
While Derulo did not confirm whether he plans to relocate the sharks, he indicated that he is taking the feedback seriously. As discussions continue online, the future of the shark tank remains uncertain.
The debate highlights ongoing concerns about exotic animal ownership and the responsibilities public figures face when showcasing animals on social media platforms. For now, Derulo says he is weighing his options while considering the welfare of the sharks and the concerns raised by critics.
