Comedian Carlos Mencia faces 12 felony charges linked to unpaid taxes
Comedian Carlos Mencia has been arrested and charged with 12 felony counts after California authorities alleged he failed to report and pay taxes on more than $8.7m in income.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced the charges on June 18, describing Mencia as one of California’s biggest tax offenders. According to prosecutors, the 58 year old entertainer allegedly failed to file both personal and corporate state income taxes between 2019 and 2024.
Authorities said Mencia, whose real name is Ned Arnel Holness, owes more than $300,000 in state taxes. Interest and penalties could significantly increase the amount owed.
The charges include six felony counts for allegedly failing to file personal income tax returns with intent to evade taxes and six additional counts related to corporate taxes. Prosecutors said the case marks the first one brought by the district attorney’s newly created Business Tax Fraud Unit, which was established in May.
Mencia was arrested at his Los Angeles home at approximately 7am on Thursday. He was later held on $250,000 bail and is expected to appear in court on Monday. If convicted on all counts, he could face more than 11 years in prison in addition to repaying taxes and interest.
District Attorney Hochman said Mencia had regularly paid taxes before 2019. Officials stated that the comedian received 78 notices regarding delinquent tax obligations but allegedly failed to respond.
The current case concerns state taxes only. Prosecutors said they had not received any indication from the Internal Revenue Service regarding potential federal proceedings.
Born in Honduras and raised in East Los Angeles, Mencia rose to prominence during the late 1990s and early 2000s. He became widely known through his Comedy Central series Mind of Mencia, which ran from 2005 to 2008 and combined stand up routines with sketch comedy.
Throughout his career, Mencia frequently addressed race, class and Latino culture in his material. His popularity later declined following accusations from fellow comedians regarding joke theft, allegations he repeatedly denied. A public confrontation with Joe Rogan in 2007 became a major viral moment, while Mencia later discussed the controversy at length on Marc Maron’s podcast.
Despite the legal case, Mencia has continued performing stand up and had upcoming dates scheduled in Southern California and Las Vegas.
His attorney had not publicly commented on the allegations at the time of the announcement. Mencia has not yet entered a plea, and the charges remain allegations until proven in court.
