Anya Taylor-Joy hints at difficult memories from working on ‘Furiosa’ with George Miller

Anya Taylor-Joy has opened up about the emotional challenges she faced while making Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, describing the experience as one that left her feeling more isolated than any project she had previously undertaken.

The actress made the remarks during a recent interview while reflecting on her career. Although she stopped short of providing specific details, Taylor-Joy acknowledged that discussing the production remains difficult for her.

“It’s a very difficult conversation to have,” she said. “I’ve never been more alone than making that movie. I don’t want to go too deep into it. Talk to me in 20 years.”

Her comments quickly attracted attention among fans and film observers, with many speculating about what may have contributed to the demanding experience. However, Taylor-Joy did not criticise director George Miller or any member of the production team, nor did she suggest there had been any conflict behind the scenes.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga was directed by George Miller and served as a prequel to 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road. Taylor-Joy stepped into the role of Imperator Furiosa, previously portrayed by Charlize Theron, and starred alongside Chris Hemsworth and Tom Burke.

The film required an extensive shoot that took place largely in Australia and involved large scale action sequences, physically demanding scenes and long periods away from home. Productions of this scale are often known for their intense schedules and challenging environments.

Despite her comments about the emotional toll of the project, Taylor-Joy has previously spoken positively about George Miller and praised his creative vision. During promotional interviews surrounding the film’s release, she described the filmmaker as someone she deeply admired and expressed gratitude for being part of the Mad Max universe.

Released in 2024, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga explored the origins of the iconic warrior and expanded the post apocalyptic world first introduced by Miller decades earlier. The film received strong reviews from critics, who praised Taylor-Joy’s performance and Miller’s ambitious storytelling.

Taylor-Joy has become one of Hollywood’s most sought after performers in recent years following acclaimed roles in The Queen’s Gambit, The Menu, Last Night in Soho and The Super Mario Bros Movie.

Her latest remarks suggest that the experience of making Furiosa remains deeply personal.
