Olivia Wilde reveals conversation that solidified decision to split from Jason Sudeikis

Olivia Wilde has shared details of the conversation she says marked the end of her relationship with Jason Sudeikis, revealing how a birthday-night exchange brought years of growing distance into focus.

Speaking on the Call Her Daddy podcast, the actress and filmmaker reflected on the breakdown of her nearly decade-long relationship with the Ted Lasso star and explained how the experience influenced themes explored in her latest film, The Invite.

"It's no surprise to me that I ended up making a movie about relationships and the complexity of determining whether a relationship is over because it is not an overnight process," Wilde said. "It's very difficult."

Wilde recalled that she and Sudeikis had been experiencing a "real bumpy, bumpy ride" before a conversation on March 10 2020 changed everything.

"And we were driving home from my birthday party, my friends had had. And I said, 'Did you get me a birthday present?' And he said, 'What would I get you, Olivia? I don't know you,'" Wilde said. "And he wasn't wrong. We didn't know each other anymore."

According to Wilde, the exchange forced them to acknowledge how disconnected they had become. She said it ultimately led to the realisation that the relationship had reached its end.

The former couple met at a Saturday Night Live after-party in 2011 and became engaged in 2013. Although they never married, they spent almost a decade together and share two children, Otis and Daisy.

Despite the split, Wilde spoke positively about their co-parenting relationship, describing Sudeikis as a "very capable co-parent". She said shared custody has allowed both parents to be fully present during their time with their children.

Wilde also reflected on being served custody papers while presenting onstage at CinemaCon in 2022. Calling the incident traumatic, she said Sudeikis later told her he had not known the papers would be delivered publicly.
