Thrill-seekers will soon have a new reason to visit Six Flags Great America, as the amusement park has announced the official opening date for its highly anticipated record-breaking roller coaster, Wrath of Rakshasa.

According to Six Flags, the new attraction will open to the public on July 4, 2026, at the park in Gurnee, Illinois. The ride has already generated significant excitement among coaster enthusiasts thanks to its record-setting design and intense layout.

Manufactured by Bolliger & Mabillard, Wrath of Rakshasa will become the world's steepest dive coaster when it opens, featuring a dramatic 96-degree drop that sends riders plunging more than 170 feet at speeds reaching 67 mph.

The coaster's experience begins with riders being lifted to the top of a towering structure before briefly hanging over the edge of the vertical drop. Once released, trains race through a series of inversions, twists and high-speed manoeuvres designed to deliver a highly intense ride experience.

In total, Wrath of Rakshasa will feature five inversions, including a dive loop, zero-gravity roll and corkscrew elements. The attraction is themed around Rakshasa, a powerful demon from Hindu mythology, with park officials promising immersive storytelling and elaborate visual design throughout the queue and ride area.

The new coaster is one of the biggest investments in Six Flags Great America's recent history and forms part of the park's wider efforts to introduce major attractions following the merger between Six Flags and Cedar Fair.

Park president John Krajnak described the attraction as a “must-ride experience” and said guests can expect one of the most thrilling roller coasters ever built. He added that the opening represents a major milestone for the park ahead of the busy summer season.

Located roughly 45 miles north of Chicago, Six Flags Great America is already home to several notable roller coasters, but Wrath of Rakshasa is expected to become the park's headline attraction when it debuts.

With its record-breaking drop, high-speed layout and mythology-inspired theme, the coaster is poised to become one of the most talked-about new rides in North America this year.
